SECURITY series

Every day, security envelopes arrive in the mail, patterned on the inside to protect the information they secure. Utility bills, bank checks, scams of every description, sometimes a personal letter. The patterns are a kind of incidental abstraction, performing the simple job of obscuring information thought to be worth hiding. In my SECURITY SERIES paintings, the envelopes have been unfolded. What was supposed to be hidden is missing altogether. The part that was meant to conceal is, instead, revealed.

Sometimes the envelopes have little windows cut into them. They are intended to selectively reveal addresses or account numbers, but here reveal only the wall behind the painting.
