Peter Wegner is an American artist whose work explores color. He’s interested in common cultural artifacts and everyday materials, those he’s described as “so common we don’t even see them anymore.” Paint chips, maps and billboards have all inspired significant bodies of work.

"Monument to Change," Wegner’s signature piece for the Stanford University campus, makes use of the split-flap technology seen in European train stations. But here, arrivals and departures have been replaced with color, resulting in a work he terms a “perpetual painting.” He describes it as "painting at the scale of architecture.”

Similarly, in his installations of colored paper, Wegner builds walls from hundreds of thousands of sheets of various hues.

The paradoxical quality of this work is common in Wegner's oeuvre, readily seen in his ongoing photographic series "Buildings Made of Sky."

Formally, Wegner's work has a strong conceptual grounding as he works across and between a wide range of disciplines: painting, sculpture, installation, collage, artist's books and photography.

Wegner's artwork has been widely exhibited in the United States and internationally, including solo presentations at Lever House, The Bohen Foundation, and Museum der bildenden Kunste.

Permanent museum collections include The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Yale University Art Gallery, The San Jose Museum of Art, The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, The University of Colorado Art Museum, The UNC Ackland Art Museum, and The Henry Art Gallery at UW.
